Independence Day · July, 26th
On July 26, 1965 the Maldives gained full independence from Great Britain. To commemorate this, parades, colorful events and street performances are held across the country every year.
Victory Day · November, 3rd
On this day in 1988, Sri Lankan mercenaries attempted to overthrow the then incumbent president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The government house in Male was liberated and the date became Victory Day. Military parades, dances and costume processions take place during the holiday.
Republic Day · November, 11th
An event of national significance in the Maldives, celebrating the re-establishment of the republic of the islands in 1968. The Republic Day is celebrated with marches and parades, songs, dances and colorful street festivities.
Food Festival · Last week of November
Exotic fruits, delicacies, seafood – all of these can be found at the Maldives’ most “delicious” festival. During the festival, producers and farmers from all over the archipelago gather in Male to present and sell their produce.

Maldives National Day, known as Qaumee Dhuvas, is observed to celebrate the victory over the Portuguese occupation in 1573. This holiday, based on the lunar calendar, takes place 11 days before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, and has no fixed date. During this time, lavish parades are held and fireworks are set off all over the country.
